Meditative observation is how I immerse myself into the process of abstracted still life painting – its relationships, history, and symbolism. Interpretation of the current environment and still life render a moment in time of our journey. Axis mundi, the still point, explores the connection of the divine and humanity through these objects.
Teresa Kalnoskas was born 1963 in Washington, D.C. The family of nine relocated to a small farm in Northeast Pennsylvania where the artist began private painting lessons at the age of nine. Following studies in Cortona Italy with the University of Georgia, Penland School of Crafts, and Kutztown University, Kalnoskas moved to San Francisco in 1985. The lush variety of the California harvest, her childhood family farm, and the significant influences of the Italian butcher shops developed into a passion for expressionistic still life painting. In the early 1990’s, Kalnoskas temporarily returned to the eastern United States to pursue graduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University and Tufts University.
Kalnoskas’ first solo museum exhibit was at the Triton Museum of Art. Other museum representation included Schweinfurth Museum of Art, Fitchburg Art Museum, Arnot Art Museum, and California Museum of Art. The iconic, action-driven, still-life inspired, large-scale abstract oil paintings continued to be exhibited in galleries and museum extensively in the West and Northeast with corporate collections of the work
throughout the US and in Asia.
Recent artist residences at the Lucid Art Foundation, Morris Graves Foundation, and Happy Landing Inn Residency have become instrumental in a new exploration of quiet nature, energy and spirituality in paint. The artist currently lives and works in Emeryville, California in the San Francisco Bay Area.
