April 1 – 24, 2027
Opening Reception: Friday, April 2, 2027
I am focused on bringing the story of Minnesota, a so-called “flyover state” that rarely commands sustained national attention into broader national spaces, including California. The upheaval here is not peripheral. It is central to understanding the American political climate. Through painting, I raise awareness of events that might otherwise be flattened into headlines or overlooked entirely.
Laura Hanson is a painter based in Anoka, Minnesota, a northern suburb of the Twin Cities. Her experience spans ceramics, comics, theater, printmaking and painting, though painting has become her primary medium. After stepping away from making work for several years following a traumatic life event, she returned to painting in 2019. What began as a means of coping evolved into a sustained political practice rooted in resistance, documentation, and civic engagement.
