Rotella’s style results from a convergence of influences by illustrator Norman Rockwell in his storytelling through the human figure, Vermeer and Sargent in their use of brush stroke economy, and Albert Bierstadt in his depiction of grandiose landscapes. Because of its versatility and historical significance, oil and canvas are Rotella’s medium of choice. Yet, as a millennial, he embraces the ease and speed of digital art and modern techniques, particularly when creating study sketches and while going through the problem-solving process of composition.
Stephen began drawing at the age of four, tracing over images of cars and Marvel characters. This love of art continued to grow, and he ultimately earned his bachelor’s degree in studio art from CSU Channel Islands in 2012, and then a Master of Arts in education in 2024. He enjoys studying, teaching, and especially
creating art. Whether small paintings delivered to seaside galleries, live wedding paintings that capture an eternal moment, or large-scale backdrops for musical performances, he loves it all. However, painting the human figure and nature have always been of most interest to him. Rotella’s work has appeared in exhibitions at locations such as the Ventura Harbor Village Gallery and Paris American Academy in France, and his work is part of private collections along the West Coast. He currently lives in Fresno County, California with his bride, Lacey.
