Benjamin (Benny) Jordan is an artist based out of Visalia, California, with almost 30 years of experience in the art industry. Born in Visalia, but raised in Orange County, he began his art career doing creature concept design for a low budget SFX company right after high school in 1994. He went on to earn his associate degree in graphic design and multi-media in ’96, but felt his life and art career were stagnant, and so enlisted into the United States Army as an Airborne Ranger. During his term of service, he was disciplined several times for using his bed sheets as art canvases.
Recently he’s taken to creating large scale charcoal drawings. While he doesn’t feel that charcoal is his strongest medium, he likes to try new things creatively. He creates his charcoal work usually at about 3×3 ft, which is the size of the card table he uses as a sturdy backing. The surface is a roll of painter’s paper.
Since working in charcoal, Benny have begun experimenting with making his own charcoal sticks and has played around with different wood types, thicknesses and time over heat. Benny’s concluded that he will never buy charcoal from the store again. He enjoys the process and creating art from tools made by his own hands on my own gives him a greater sense of satisfaction while drawing.
The reason Benny draws is because that is what is inside of him. Creating art is therapeutic and a great escape from the worries of everyday life for him.
