“It is clear to me that women do not have a universal feminine way of experiencing the world, but I hope there are ways in which common threads draw us together.” – Ruth Soderlund

“The work in this exhibit is made from well-used kitchen utensils, a Sunbeam steam iron and my late mother-in-law’s ironing board that she bought from a door-to-door salesman in the 1940s. I used hundreds of vintage pearl necklaces; it is important to note that they once were worn by women who cherished them. It is my desire to suggest the many layered, often beautiful and sometimes tragic nature of our existence.” – Nancy Youdelman

Founded in 2024, the Fresno-based Abnormal Coven exists to uplift and encourage female/femme artists in their artistic work and liberation from patriarchal and capitalist norms. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Canvas project began with building the canvases together, then each canvas was passed from artist to artist for each to respond to each other’s work. The resulting twelve canvases represent the multifaceted reality of each artist as they show up in the world.
