February 4 – February 27, 2015
Reception: Friday, February 6th, 6 – 8pm
The Sofa Art Show returns to Arts Visalia for the twentienth year with the 2015 theme, Highways & Byways: A Sofa Art Road Trip. Once again, we are seeking artists (and, perhaps, “occassional” artists) to submit artworks for this long-running, community-oriented art exhibition. Think of the famous roadways people travel and the popular roadside stops along the way. Route 66 and the Pacific Coast Highway may come to mind; perhaps a well-worn road a little nearer to home. Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley could serve as an inspiration. A road trip isn’t only about the destination and the sights along the way, often it’s as much about the experience, the people we meet along the way and the things we learn about ourselves.
Of course, this is Sofa Art. That is, it is an exhibition which is intended to poke fun at the idea of art being made to match one’s sofa. In this case, the sofa becomes the subject of the artwork… or perhaps the protagonist. With that in mind, the artwork must include an image of a sofa or something to sit on such as a bench, chair, stool or…use your imagination!
The first Sofa Art Show was held in 1996 as a playful response to an unflattering depiction of Visalia’s local art scene as described by a local newspaper writer. Sofa Art Co-Founder Varian Mace, then an art instructor at College of the Sequoias, shared the article with her classes and challenged them to make some “real sofa art” in response. The resulting exhibition was a hit, to say the least, and has been an annual Visalia tradition ever since.
Artwork entries for Sofa Art XX may be delivered to Arts Visalia during regular gallery hours (Wednesday through Saturday from Noon to 5:30pm). The deadline to deliver artworks is Saturday, January 31st (noon to 3pm that day).
Sofa Art XX: Highways & Byways will be on display at Arts Visalia from February 4th through February 27th. An opening reception will be held Friday, February 6th from 6 to 8 pm. Attendance to of the all events is free and open to the public.
