Throughout my career as an artist, I have evolved my work from self-portraiture, to explore a more universal narrative that others can relate to. In my recent work: Queerness Past & Present I explored my research of queer coding in art history and modernized it with the use of my “chosen family”. A chosen family is a sacred entity to queer people. We grow up as a version of ourselves that is modified to accommodate the need of our “blood family”, this version is not the real version of ourselves. With our chosen family we can be our complete authentic selves, and I showcased that idea within the contents of the work. My chosen family consists of transgender individuals, bisexuals, homosexuals, and gender queer people. I chose to feature these folks in my work to modernize the idea of queerness. Often the idea of queerness has been gatekept by the white gay men in society. While featuring diversity in queerness I also drew references from art history specifically to disprove the narrative that “queerness is a newfound concept” or that it’s a symptom of the contemporary idea of the “woke virus”. We have always been here.
